Fire Department Patches Needed for MDA Ambassador Chloe Ochoa

Chloe Ochoa is a five year old from Homewood Illinois.  Chloe has been a fighter from the very beginning. She was born 6 weeks early weighing 4lbs. 0 oz. and spent 13 days in the NICU before coming home. She started walking around 18 months and her parents began to notice her frequent falling and trouble standing up. Right before her 2 year check-up she starting asking for help getting up when she fell and would crawl over to furniture to help her stand up. Her pediatrician sent Chloe to a Neuromuscular Disorder Specialist who ordered some x-rays and blood work. On December 22, 2005 the families’ worst fears were confirmed that her tests came back positive for SMA type III.

Chloe is registered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and attends the MDA at clinic at University of Chicago and utilizes a sparkly pink walker and ankle braces to assist her.  She was recently selected as the 2009 MDA Illinois State Goodwill Ambassador and will be traveling through the State of Illinois to represent MDA and thank all of our various sponsors and supporters.

Chloe continues to inspire everyone she meets!  Our friends at Lowe’s Home Improvement were so inspired by Chloe that they built Chloe her own playhouse for her backyard.  Chloe has had the opportunity to meet so many heroes through MDA boot drives and Firefighter meetings that Chloe wants to be a firefighter!  With that in mind, our friends at Lowe’s built Chloe a playhouse that looks just like a fire engine!  The house will be delivered to Chloe once the weather gets a little warmer.

Lowe’s has done a fantastic job creating this playhouse for Chloe, but we will be helping to put our special touch on it —  that’s where we need your help!  We would like to incorporate your support of MDA into Chloe’s playhouse!

To be a part of this, we are asking each of you to send a department patch to the Homewood Fire Department, c/o John Elashik at 17950 Dixie Highway, Homewood, IL 60430.  Please send your patch by February 1, 2009.  If you have any questions, please contact John Elashik at the Homewood F.D. at 708-825-4991.
